My First Honda

Many, many, many, many moons ago, I wanted a 1987 Honda Prelude. I thought it was the coolest car…EVER! Did I get the Prelude…NO! Hold on! Hold on! Hold on! Some of you may not know what the Honda Prelude was, and some of you may know more than anyone could ever want to know, but it was my dream car! So my parents got me a Honda Accord. Nice car, but I was a Junior in high school (natch! now you know my age) and I wanted a cool car. Not something reliable. My compromise was something cool and reliable, i.e. a Honda Prelude.

Let me just say that it is true, it doesn’t matter what color or model you get at the dealership…once my parents were buying me a brand new 1987 Honda Accord off the show room floor, I sped around the parking lot like the spoiled brat you all probably think I was/am. And I loved that car for 8 months!

You see, I probably was a bit of a brat back then. But no matter, I worked really hard to save up enough money to have my parents match my savings and finally get me…wait for it….wait for it….a 1988 Honda Prelude! (Yes, my family is the customer car dealerships love to do business with.) So I ended up with a black on black, sunroof with a wind visor, luggage rack on the trunk, since the spoiler wasn’t out until the 1989 model, and the silver strip on the bottom of the door panels that said “Prelude.”  Ahhhhhhh…the memories. But more importantly, can you envision my sweet ride? She was a beaut. And that was the year I got my personal license plate that I still have to this day on my SUV. Sorry, I can’t give out that information…I don’t want to be hounded for autographs. Ha! Ha! Ha!

But seriously, I kept my Honda Prelude for 188,000 miles, and only traded her in for a 2004 Honda Accord because I needed a larger vehicle. I can honestly say that my 1988 Honda Prelude was ,and still is my favorite car. Was it because I worked hard for it? Was it because it was cool? Was it because it was a Honda? You tell me.

Cliché or Resolutions?

Happy New Year! Did you make a resolution this year or a cliché? Just curious because Webster’s Dictionary defines resolution as “a formal statement. Determination.”  And we all know that by Valentine’s Day, all promises for a better year made 45 days prior are thrown out the door because of one word. Chocolate. It matters not if you like dark, milk, white, or don’t.

I know I have not been as resolute as I stated when the clock struck 12. But my intentions were all there..yep, I planned to eat nothing but tuna and oatmeal until I dropped the holiday weight. You do notice the use of -ed for past tense? And it isn’t even Valentine’s Day! 8 days (wasn’t that a movie or song?) into 2013, and I’m eating white cheddar cheese popcorn 10:30 at night, watching, “The Adventures of Tin Tin.”  Great graphics by the way.

So! What do we use as our motivating factor when it comes to succeeding at our pre-determined goals for the upcoming year? Here’s a suggestion: get a new car! Everyone feels good in a new car. What happens when we feel better? We act better. We look better. We work harder. We smile more. We make people happy. We make ourselves happy.

Now isn’t that the best resolution of all? To be happy in 2013.

Honda Loves Racing

To bring attention to a deep rooted affiliation with ‘fast’ and competitive, Honda’s marketing agency has developed a campaign to promote their involvement with IZOD IndyCar®.  The campaign also helps promote the INDY 500.

The “Fastest Seat in Sports” sweepstakes gives race enthusiasts the opportunity to win a ride in the IZOD IndyCar® two-seater driven by Andretti at one of 12 races for the 2012 IndyCar® season.  For the first time, this year’s sweepstakes prizes include rides in the Indy 500 and two international races in Brazil and China.

A 60-second version will first air during the Indy 500, and a 30-second version began airing April 1 to promote the sweepstakes.

Back from the future, it’s a concept, and it’s Honda’s NSX

When Acura pulled the satiny sheet off of the NSX concept at the Detroit auto show there was applause. And we don’t mean the meek clapping.  This was actual, apparently sincere applause for a car. Honda’s U.S. chief, Takanobu Ito, who served on the engineering team for the first NSX, appeared to inflate as he breathed in the goodwill.

“In this new era, even as we focus on the fun to drive spirit of the NSX, I think a supercar must respond positively to environmental responsibilities,” said Honda president Takanobu Itoh.

VTEC V6 direct injection engine dated 2 Electric Motor Drive Unit. “Sport Hybrid System SH-AWD will make the Honda NSX a remarkable expression of Acura idea to create a synergy between man and machine,” said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor Company, told journalists while in Detroit.

The legendary NSX supercar will be reborn in 2015.

Celebrities and their Cars

We all love cars but here are five celebrities who LOVE cars!

Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren’s passion for style is certainly illustrious, but it may indeed be eclipsed by his passion for automobiles.  The fashion magnate himself has one of the world’s most impressive car collections, a private grouping spanning nearly 100 years of automotive history featuring the most lust-worthy marques.  A 1938 Bugatti, a 1958 Ferrari Testa Rossa and a 2010 Lamborghini Murielago highlight his private stock, rounding out a collection of automobiles that rivals some of the world’s best.  Lauren’s garage is a museum of automotive history, an archive of performance machines that represent the finest achievements in Motorsports.

Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean)

As Mr. Bean, he always left chaos in his wake.  In August 2011 Rowan Atkinson was involved in a real-life disaster, crashing his 240mph supercar as he drove home from work on a spoof spy movie. The comedy star lost control of his McLaren F1, careening across the median into a tree and a road sign before the £635,000 sports car burst into flames. He walked from the car waited for an ambulance.Nick Mason

When he isn’t busy being the drummer for Pink Floyd, Nick Mason is an avid classic and luxury auto enthusiast.  Mason has a passion for fast cars, luxury cars and competed in the Le Mans 24 Hours race five times.  In his garage lurk the likes of Ferrari, Porsche 962, Bentley, Aston Martin, Jaguar, and Bugatti.

Jerry Seinfeld

You’d probably never think it, but funny man Jerry Seinfeld is a pretty hopped up gear head.

Now that he’s semi-retired with millions of greenbacks in the bank, the New York native finally has time to indulge in his favorite pastime – Porsche’s.  Seinfeld has no less than 60 cars in his collection.

Jay Leno

Perhaps the most famed celebrity who loves all that is auto; Leno’s luxury car collection includes approximately 200 specimens, including Bugatti and a jet-powered motorcycle.  Hey, whatever grinds his gears. Leno employs a full-time staff of four mechanics/fabricators to maintain his fleet of luxury cars.  He also has a complete workshop, and simply calls on his way to work to have the car of his choice ready for him.

A Honda for your Teen

You have teenagers, they always need to borrow the car and summer break is only a few months away. They always want to borrow the car a lot more in the summer… to get to their job, their friend’s house or to an activity.  Let’s say you’re going to buy them their own car to teach them about responsibility. recently compiled a list of ‘6 Best New Cars For Your Teenage‘.

Here’s what they had to say about the Honda Fit:

“The Honda Fit is one of our favorite small cars for drivers of any age. Despite its diminutive, easy-to-park size, the Fit’s back seat seems impossibly big, and the 20.6 cubic foot cargo bay and fancy folding rear seat means the Honda Fit can accommodate all the gear your active teen can throw into it. The Fit’s simple control layout and big windows make for easy, distraction free driving, and while the Honda Fit isn’t the cheapest small car, it’s built to last — Hondas are notoriously trouble-free, which means the Fit can serve your teen driver through high school, college, grad school, and well into that first job, and will even accommodate car seats and baby strollers. In fact, it’s entirely possible that your teen-age Honda Fit driver may end up as an adult with a teen-age Honda Fit.”

We have new Honda Fits on the lot, so stop by Autopark Honda we’ve got you covered!

The Hybrid winner is… the 2012 Honda Insight

Kelley Blue Book published their 2012 Total Cost of Ownership Awards list and guess who won the Hybrid Car category: The 2012 Honda Insight!

“An affordable and attractive entry point to the super-efficient gasoline-electric realm, the Honda Insight shares powertrain elements with the Honda Civic Hybrid and receives aerodynamic revisions for 2012 that further enhance its already stellar EPA ratings. The Insight’s lower fair purchase price and subsequent lower depreciation figure helped this five-passenger five-door claim top spot in the Hybrid Car category over its sportier two-seat cousin, the Honda CR- Z.” (Kelley Blue Book’s write up of the 2012 Honda Insight)

The Total Cost of Ownership Awards looks at many factors when choosing a winner. While initial price is always a prime focus when making a new vehicle purchase decision, ultimately the ‘best deal’ also entails factoring in a number of other elements that can have an equally meaningful impact on long-term expenses. To help bring those big picture details into focus, Kelley Blue Book calculated and integrated data from eight different categories to come up with real-world bottom-line figure that allows for direct comparisons to be made over a five-year period.

If you’re interested in becoming a little more green this year stop by Autopark Honda, take an Insight out for a test drive and see what all the fuss is about.

2012 Honda Odyssey: Best Minivan Award

The 2012 Honda Odyssey has received the 2012 MotorWeek Drivers’ Choice Award for Best Minivan. This is the sixth time the Odyssey has garnered the Drivers’ Choice Award from MotorWeek, with Honda’s benchmark minivan having won the award in back-to-back years in 1999/2000, 2005/2006 and now 2011/2012. MotorWeek looks at the factors mattering most to consumers – price, practicality, performance and fuel efficiency – when selecting the winner.

“When it comes to vacationing with lots of family and friends, and carrying all their belongings, we can’t think of a more comfortable way to do it than in the Honda Odyssey.  And that’s why it’s back again this year as our Best Minivan. Despite a new Nissan Quest and revamped Chrysler vans, we still prefer the Odyssey’s extra smooth ride, Accord-like handling, and cavernous cabin. But most of all, we love its class leading 28-MPG Highway fuel economy rating.” says MotorWeek.

Here are some of the facts: (visit us to learn more)

  • Transmission: 5-Speed Automatic / 6-Speed Automatic
  • Engine:  3.5L, V6, 24-valve SOHC i-VTEC, 248-hp, 250 lbs/ft of torque,
  • Length/weight: 202.9 inches / 4337 – 4560 lbs
  • Wheelbase: 118.1 inches
  • EPA fuel economy: 18 city / 27 highway / 21 combined (5 speed), 19 city / 28 highway / 22 combined (6 speed)
  • Cargo capacity: 38.4 cubic feet (behind the 3rd row)

It has also earned a 5-Star overall safety rating from both NHTSA and is the Top Safety Pick by the IIHS, an achievement that no other currently tested minivan can match.

Stop by Autopark Honda, take an Odyssey out for a test drive and see what all the fuss is about.
